FastRawViewer overview

FastRawViewer is the only WYSIWYG RAW viewer that allows to see RAW exactly as a converter will "see" it, and provides RAW-based tools to estimate what a converter will be able to squeeze from the shot. FastRawViewer is a must have; it's all you need for extremely fast and reliable culling, direct presentation, as well as for speeding up of the conversion stage of any amounts of any RAW images of every format.

What's new in version 2.0.11

Camera Support
  • Canon EOS C50, EOS R6 Mark III
  • Fujifilm X-E5,X-T30 III
  • Hasselblad X2D II 100C
  • Leica M EV1, Q3 Monochrom
  • Nikon Coolpix P1100, ZR
  • OM System OM-5 Mark II
  • Panasonic DC-S1 IIE (DC-S1M2E), DC-S1 II (DC-S1M2)
  • Ricoh GR IV, GR IV Monochrome
  • Sony ILME-FX2, DSC-RX1R Mark III (DSC-RX1RM3), DSC-RX100-VIIA (DSC-RX100M7A)
Preliminary Camera Support
  • Sony A7 V (ILCE-7M5)
  • Lossless compressed RAWs are fully supported; Compressed/Compressed HQ RAWs: embedded/external JPEG displayed.
Improvements/Bug Fixes
  • Support for large (>2GB) CRM format movies/CR3 bursts.
  • To enable: use EnableCR3Movies hidden settings script (to disable: DisableCR3Movies script)
  • Of course there is no video support, the first frame of the video/burst is displayed.
  • Experimental/incomplete: detection of baked-in white balance for Canon files (CR2 and CR3)
  • To enable/disable: use EnableCanonBakedWBCheck/DisableCanonBakedWBCheck hidden settings scripts.
  • Improved handling of corrupted Nikon HE/HE* compressed files.
  • Improved reading of xmp blocks from jpeg files
  • This is an experimental option that has only been tested in our test environment, so it is possible to fallback to previous version via these hidden setting scripts:
  • ModernJPEGXMPReader (default value) - use improved/modern reader
  • LegacyJPEGXMPReader - use old (legacy) reader
  • New setting: Preferences - XMP - XMP tag for Title: According to IPTC specifications, Headline is more suitable for FRV's 'Title' because IPTC's Title is a 'human readable reference, usually a file name', while Headline is a 'brief synopsis'.
  • However, for compatibility with previous versions of FRV (and XMP files created by those versions), the default value for this setting is dc:title.
  • dc:title - write FRV 'XMP Title' into XMP's dc:title tag.
  • photoshop:Headline - write XMP Title into photoshop:Headline tag
  • Turning off the 'Handle RAW+JPEG together' setting turns off the 'Join RAW+HEIC' setting too.
New View Mode
  • Menu - View - Invert Colors
  • Inverts image colors in single view mode (just (r,g,b) = 1.0-(r,g,b) in linear mode before display color profile and gamma correction applied).
  • Intended (mostly) for quick-n-durty inspection of film negative scans, but color mask is not subtracted so colors are not accurate.
  • For RAW scans (DNG): Auto white balance will give the best result. For TIFF/JPEG scans: WB is not available.
  • Shortcut: not assigned by default, use Menu - Customize - Keyboard Shortcuts - Image Display section to assign shortcut.
  • There is no indication of this mode in the bottom bar, only checkmark in menu item.
  • This display mode is restored on FRV restart if Preferences - Interface - Restore last View settings... is checked.
Auto-Ettr Settings
  • Auto-ETTR settings: the number of significant digits has been increased in 'Saturate up to' setting to allow values between 0.0 and 0.1
  • Auto-ETTR settings: new 'Manual Adjust' setting in ETTR/Autoexposure section.
  • The value of this setting is added to the calculated auto-exposure value.
  • Notes:
  • If calculated value (Auto-correction plus adjustment) is negative: zero correction is applied
  • All calculations are performed before 'Adobe hidden exposure' (BLE) shift is applied to displayed correction value.
New Action/Menu Item
  • Select - Append Selection to file:
  • No standard shortcut, can be assigned in the usual way (in the "File Selection for Batch" section of the shortcut editor)
  • If a selection has not been saved during the current session, a standard file selection dialog opens.
  • If a save was made during the current session, the last used file will be appended (with visual feedback).
  • Added the Selection - Reset last used selection save file on folder change setting, enabled by default. If enabled, the last file used for saving is reset (forgotten) when the current folder is changed.
  • Preferences - File operations section is split into two because it has become too big.
  • The DSC file extension has been removed from the list of standard file extensions recognized by FRV.This extension was used by some very old and rare Kodak cameras. Also, a file with this extension (containing no images) is written to the root folder of a memory card by Nikon cameras. As a result, visiting memory card root folder in FRV results in a file decoding error. If you still have RAW files with this extension, add *.dsc to the Preferences - File Handling - Additional RAW extenstions setting.
New Setting
  • Preferences - File Operations - Copy/Move filename confict resolve with options:
  • Ask user: ask user on every conflict (default)
  • Auto resolve: destfolder/filename-(N).ext will be created on confilct with destfolder/filename.ext
  • Replace target: old file in the destination folder will be replaced with the new one
  • (note: if destination file is read-only/locked, then additional user prompt will appear).
  • Skip copy/move: copy/move will not be performed for the conflicting file(s) without an additional confirmation.
  • Stop copy/move: copy/move will be stopped without an additional prompt
  • Note: this setting affects copy/move operations only; filename conflicts on file rename are handled according to rename dialog setting.
  • New setting: Preferences - Other - Extra messages mask, enables additional (very specific) messages to Debug log.
  • New hidden setting AutoScrollToActiveItem, enabled by default.
  • If disabled: Filmstrip/Grid will not scroll to an active item after filtering applied or filtering data (e.g. rating/label) changed.
  • To disable/enable: use DisableAutoScrollToActiveItem/EnableAutoScrollToActiveItem hidden settings script
  • Bugfix: if Image Display - Exposure - Apply Adobe hidden exposure correction setting is off and XMP - Exposure, Contrast, WB - Force Adobe software to match FastRawViewer brightness setting is on, and the exposure information is taken from an XMP file in Adobe settings section, then the Adobe correction (hidden exposure compensation) was not added to the exposure value.

Fastest gun in the West. You don't have to You also don't have to use RAW if you have a high resolution camera like the Nikon D850, Sony A7R II or A7R III or the Canon 5DS R. Embedded previews or accompanying jpegs work great and even faster. I use FastRawViewer to offload files from SD and CompactFlash Media, to throw away dud photos and rate the rest. Then I take the keepers put them in another folder and process them in DxO Photo Lab or Iridient Developer. There's no faster workflow for dealing with an event and getting to high quality jpegs from original RAW. If you are a photographer, FastRawViewer is the best $15 (or $20) you will ever spend on software. As other users have pointed out, FastRawViewer is kept up to date. Aesthetically FastRawViewer (a cross-platform app) is not the prettiest app in Mac history. it's easy to go to remove all the ugly chrome though just by pressing tab just like in Photoshop. FastRawViewer is infinitely configurable in what it will display (depending on your monitor size and needs) so the user can improve its looks considerably with just a little effort.

If you need to examine a lot of raws very quickly, this application is blazingly fast and well priced with regular updates and very good support. Even using a Lightroom workflow, it's too slow when having to 'pre-edit' thousands of shots, this app can do so much faster prior to import into a catalog system. It's agonizing to go back to LR's Library mode which is so utterly slow and why this product is what the LR library experience SHOULD be like but probably never will be. Plus a raw Histogram! A must have just for that functionality alone!

Absolutely recommended. I shoot RAW, so this app lets me see the original file as it is and not only the JPEG version (which I can see if I wish to)
FastRawViewer is now part of my workflow (I suppose it could be improved) : I move my RAW files from my card to a folder on my desktop, open the folder in FRV, move the rejected files to the autogenerated folder, put that folder to the crash, move the folder with the selected pictures on my Pictures folder on my external HD and import in my DAM app.
The app is fast, steadily upgraded and I think (not sure about this one) it's the only one that allows to view the RAW file and not the embedded JPEG.
I do real estate bracketed shooting and I have to deliver my work quickly. FRW saves me a huge amount of time (and of money compared to the excellent PhotoMechanic)

I just discovered this app today. I was looking at renewing my license for Photo Mechanic and found this app mentioned by others. No, it is not as complete and as robust as Photo Mechanic, nor is it anywhere near as expensive. For my purposes, this app does what I need and it works great. I am using it to organize my huge collection of JPEG files. I don't shoot RAW - yet. This app opens folders with lots of files quickly and it also scrolls very quickly. As I am a highly visually oriented user, this is a plus, to see what I have as fast as I can scroll. It allows me to link to three different external apps to edit with just as Photo Mechanic did. I have not played with what tweaks I can make directly in this app yet. There appear to be some but I am more interested in using it to catalog my images and to use external apps for the edits. I have taken some time away from photography so most of what I have is out of date. I don't yet know which app I will choose going forward. Some have already built-in DAM features and some don’t. But for $20 and this much functionality, I am very happy to have found it. I don't even know which camera I will use but I am imagining a Fuji XT-2 is in my future. I know Fuji RAW files are a bit different so I don't know how well it will work with RAW files, Fuji or otherwise - but I am not buying this app for that purpose - yet. There are one or two missing pieces which I am not taking away a star from as the developer responded that they will be added in upcoming versions and named the versions. I have also seen this mentioned in their site blog so I am trusting them to follow up for the time being. Current version as of this review is 1.3.8. According to the developers feedback; Display of File Modify Date in EXIF pane will be in 1.3.9 (very soon) Sorting by size will included with version 1.4 Handling TIFF files will be available in 1.5 I am already impressed that this app seems stable, seems more than capable for what I need it for, and that the developer has responded quickly and professionally to my pre-sales questions. And the price, yep, that about does it for me, Five stars.
